Despite the existence of some reference sites intensively studied since the beginning of the nineteenth century (Achenheim and Oberlarg for example), research on early Prehistory has been underdeveloped in recent decades in Alsace, mainly due to the lack of local participants involved in the area. Paleolithic remains have long been considered too rare, due to lack of material, or too difficult to detect because of the thick sedimentary layers. Recent research in the context of thematic prospecting and planned excavations (Mutzig and Wolschwiller) and the fortuitous discovery of several Paleolithic occupations in a preventive context motivated the creation in 2015 of the collective research project PaleoEls intended to establish a report on the archaeological evidence and Pleistocene surface formations of the region. All the work undertaken under this CRP has led to the development of regional models for the conservation and location of archaeological sites, allowing for the discovery of 7 new Paleolithic sites and the excavation of 4 of them by preventive archaeology.
